KlimaCamp09: Exercises in sustainable culture

July 19, 2009
KlimaCamp09

The interest in our future climate challenges is big, and the camp has been visited by many locals.

During this week, Valby Park has been a venue for climate debate and experiments in sustainable culture. Activists and interested parties from both Denmark and abroad have gathered to take back the climate change agenda from the politicians and companies who are more interested in image and green washing than creating the necessary and sustainable social and ecological change.

For some campers, a morning at the camp starts with training and swim, and for others it starts at the joint meeting, where the program of the day will be decided. Shortly after, the welding iron and wrenches are put to work in the bike shop and the vegan cooking pots are fired up. Mobile phones are charged by bicycle energy, while the washing water is heated by solar panels. Interest in tomorrow's climate challenges are great, and Camp09 has been visited by many locals. They are generally pleasantly surprised by the mood and settle down while some even contribue with recycled materials.

But the climate camp is much more than a week's trial in sustainable culture. The vast majority of participants at Camp09 will also be present during the COP15 summit in December. Camp09 has created the framework for an extensive network of climate activists, who generally express their frustration concerning how the fight against climate changes has blindly been put into the hands of policy, while politicians are pushing the responsibility back to individuals. We need collective solutions to collective problems. This has to be backed by actions, and Camp09 activists have declared a collective climate fight.

Camp09 was also attended by a bike caravan, coming all the way from Hamburg. The bicycle is also central when KlimaX on Saturday revives an old friend/tradition and exposes the Copenhagen streets to "Critical Mass", a cycling demonstration with the message "A city for people - not cars and speculation!"
